Access to Kowanyama by road

Subject to road conditions and the capability of your vehicle, Kowanyama can be accessed from the south via Normanton, from the north via Pormpuraaw and from Cairns, Mareeba and Chillagoe in the east via the Burke Developmental Road.

During the wet season, which can begin as early as November and extend through to April each year, some or all of those access roads may be either closed to all vehicles or some vehicles under certain conditions.

Access from Pormpuraaw in the north is only open for a very limited time each year (usually from July to November). The height of the Mitchell River determines whether this road is open or not.

The lower western part of the Gulf is not on regular Cape York 4WD itineraries so even during the dry season there is very little traffic on these roads. Motorists should be particularly aware that there is no fuel available for the 400 km stretch between Chillagoe and Kowanyama.
